Trick or Treat 2010

Alternative title for this post: MOM, STOP CALLING ME ASKING WHY I HAVEN'T POSTED TRICK-OR-TREAT PHOTOS YET.

Here you go.
So, besides training a new puppy (who is very slowly learning that shitting in my living room is not okay) and photographing and editing thousands of family photos for other people and making lots of phone calls to our insurance company after last week's wind storm that ripped apart a sizable section of shingles from our roof, I also had 2 Halloween costumes to make before the weekend.

As much as I like to make fun of my mom here on MY blog, and as much as she drives me crazy (love you, Mom!), I always appreciate that she took the time to make Halloween costumes for us when we were kids. As Halloween would approach, she would stay up all hours of the night at the sewing machine and ironing board making sure that our costumes were ready for the big day. I have carried on the same tradition with my kids. Well, the stressing about it and staying up all hours of the night to finish part, at least. The fabric I ordered for Binny's pumpkin costume came 1 day before the Halloween parties at school, which left me very little time to make my own pattern and sew it all together. Also, I thought I ordered two yards of the orange corduroy but turns out I only ordered one. That would be why Binny is wearing her Arctic Cat snowmobile hat instead of a cute pumpkin stem hat. I just barely had enough for the pumpkin itself!
Mae's ghost costume required very little effort as far as assembly went, just a few seams and an easy hood. Putting the damn thing on proved to be more of a challenge since it seemed to keep getting smaller even after I added extra inches for seam allowance and warm weather clothing underneath.
We went Trick-or-Treating with the same bunch as last year, and this time the little frog was big enough to participate and walked the whole way unassisted with a firm grip on his candy bucket.
Even Flash got into the Halloween spirit and dressed up in a last minute costume put together by the Gardener.

RTT- Vote Today!

Well it must be Tuesday again. I see Random Tuesday Thoughts posts starting to fill my Google reader. Stop by the UnMom to catch up on all of the randomness.

randomtuesday

As for me... we made it through Halloween but now we have 2 giant bags of candy sitting on the kitchen counter. I'm hoping to do something about that very soon. Freckle posted on Facebook that the Candy Fairy stopped by their house the night of Halloween, took her kids' candy and left them each a small toy. And her kids loved the idea! So, I'm thinking that after 3 days of my kids stuffing their faces with various forms of high fructose corn syrup, the Candy Fairy may stop by today while the kids are at school and drop off a small, inedible treat and sneak off with what's left of their candy. And let's face it, after wax lips, the rest is just plain old candy.

Mae had an appointment with her pediatrician yesterday. It was just her annual physical that was due in September but I wanted to wait until all of the tests came back and we had a chance to talk with the Immunologist again. Mae's pediatrician checked her out from head to toe and said that she looked very healthy. The minor ear infection she was treated for 2 weeks ago had cleared up, blood pressure was normal, and she passed the informal doctor office eye test. Doc sounded very pleased with the findings of Mae's immune work-up and went over all of the specifics with me again. Her big concern right now is the nasty H1N1 virus. There were no H1N1 vaccines at the clinic but she did say that the schools would be vaccinating kids as soon as more vaccine becomes available and of course encouraged me to have both girls vaccinated if they don't catch it first. She said that she'd be very surprised if one or both of the girls didn't come down with it in the next week or two.

The waiting room was full of masked children coughing and wheezing waiting to see a doctor. We had to use a separate "well visit" entrance to the office itself and around every turn was a hand sanitizing station. Pretty much, I'm almost certain that we were exposed to many cases of the nasty flu yesterday but so far no signs of illness yet. *crossing my fingers* Mae's doc did say though that if Mae does come down with H1N1, she should come back to the office in request of tamilflu because of her immune defect. She also asked if I wanted Mae to have the seasonal flu shot while we were there. Of course I agreed and Mae was vaccinated for the seasonal flu (just like every other year). I called last week about the shots and was told that they didn't have any and while waiting to check in at the reception desk I heard one of the receptionists tell another parent that there were no H1N1 or seasonal flu vaccines available. I guess they must be trying to keep some around for the more at-risk kids. After all Binny isn't eligible for either tamiflu or the short supply seasonal flu shot.

In more illness related news, the school is handing out small bottles of hand sanitizer to each student and encouraging them to use it. As much as I think hand washing is important to staying healthy, I think that the hype over hand sanitizer is a little extreme. Even at the doctor's office (we've been in several lately), I see health care workers use a squirt of that stuff instead of actually washing their hands. Yeah it may kill some of the germs but it doesn't actually clean your hands the way good old soap and water does. So around here with each mention from the girls that they need a squirt, I have been gently steering them to the sink instead.

I plan to vote today. There aren't any big races around here on the ballot today but there is a school referendum that has caused some commotion in our school district. The district wants to build a new middle school and a new swimming pool to replace the old pool that is in need of some major TLC. There are always people who refuse to vote for anything that could raise their property taxes (by $164 annually for a house worth $100,000) but I did see many yard signs supporting the referendum while we were out trick or treating. I also read some wimpy opposing arguments in the Squeak saying that during a recession is not a good time to be spending money on our schools. I couldn't disagree more. With all of the federal incentives and the ability to negotiate low prices with contractors that are just hoping for new projects to come up in order to keep themselves in business, this sounds like a great time. I also happen to have 2 children that will be going to middle school in the next few years and use the swimming pool for swimming lessons... and a husband who is trying to stay employed as a construction electrician. Call me selfish but I think that this project is worth the 164 bucks.

That's it for me today. Have a good one!

Halloween Recap

The weather was cold (42 degrees!) for trick or treating but we made it through 3 whole blocks before going back to our house for a pizza party.

Pre-trick or treating excitement in the car
Mae's serious look was her way of interpreting her costume. She thinks that mummies need to be emotionless.
Our little lion friend was happy to be wearing a costume with a warm hood!

We finished the night by lighting all of the glow sticks we had in the house. (Thanks to blog reader Becky for the glow sticks!)
Hope you all had a great Halloween!

*Mae's mummy costume was made with off white burlap cut into strips, then sewn together into a big piece of fabric then sewn into pants and a top. (She wore cream colored long underwear underneath the burlap mummy costume.) Her head covering was a polar fleece neck warmer that we sacrificed by cutting a hole in it for her face.

*Binny's red crayon costume was made with red and black felt... and lots of glue. The hat was just a cheap cardboard Happy Birthday hat covered in red felt.

Halloween Costumes

We're running really late to make our Halloween rounds so these few photos will have to do for now.

More later...

Halloween Eve

It's almost 9AM and Binny is still asleep upstairs and only a few minutes ago Mae made her way down the steps and asked if it was morning. Looking out the window, you wouldn't know. The fog is so thick that the neighbor's house is hidden. The wind continues to howl and the rain stops and starts. The girls didn't have school yesterday or today because of teacher conventions. We were hoping to spend some time outside but it looks like the weather will be nasty again today. I just hope the fog and rain clears out and warms up a bit for trick-or-treating tomorrow. The costumes are all ready to go and I can't wait for the girls to wear them.

This morning since the girls were sleeping anyway, I read through my blog reader and now I'm even more excited for Halloween. Halloween is all anyone seems to be talking about, except for Helen. I was thinking just yesterday that Helen hadn't posted in a while. Turns out her husband Harold is in the hospital, but she's says he's improving. If you don't read the blog Margaret and Helen then you probably have no idea who I'm talking about but that also means you may be living under a rock and need to catch up on her reading. She's a hip old gal with a firm grasp on current events and a firm word for all of the noisemakers newsmakers. She caught my attention last year in the weeks before the presidential election with her spot on commentary and great sense of humor.

Other than that, I'm planning on a quiet day. Hopefully this extra sleep means that my girls will be in a good mood today. Maybe we'll make these pumpkin streusel muffins.

Come back tomorrow for Halloween photos!

Wardrobe Wednesday

Halloween 2007
Binny was a purse, more specifically a copy of the purse I was using at the time and Mae was a vacuum cleaner.

RTT: Halloween

Tuesday already? Time to get all random with the UnMom.

randomtuesday
First off, as much as our family loves the television show America's Funniest Home Videos, the new weeknight time slot of 9:30 pm is just too late to be busting a gut as Grandmas on roller skates bust themselves up. Seriously, I laugh so hard that after the first half hour I have to get out of bed to pee. No matter how many times I've seen it, a baseball bat to the groin or baby puking up all over an unsuspecting adult cracks me up every time.

Over the weekend we finally gave in to the girls constant begging and carved pumpkins for Halloween. For the first time we tried one of those pumpkin carving kits. Binny and Mae transferred the patterns onto the pumpkins and the Gardener and I did the sawing.
Also over the weekend I started working on Halloween costumes for the girls. They both decided several weeks ago what they were going to dress as but I needed to get myself motivated to actually assemble the costumes. Binny's only took one afternoon to cut, sew, and glue but Mae's was a bit more tricky. I finally started working on it last night but soon became frustrated and handed it all over to the Gardener who then went upstairs and worked his magic on the sewing machine (after I threaded it with the correct color). About 20 minutes later he came down with a start which hopefully I will be able to finish today as Mae's school Halloween party is tomorrow. Yikes! I'm not revealing quite yet what the girls costumes are mostly because my Mom called the other day and started hounding asking me and since I like to mess with her once in a while, I told her she had to wait until Halloween. So I promise I'll post photos on Saturday, but for now it's a secret.

That's it for today, I still have to shower and make a quick run to the grocery store before Binny gets home from school.

Oh, one more thing. Mae aced her very first spelling test! We went over the words again and again and I knew she would do well, but seeing that perfect paper with a Halloween sticker on top made my heart smile. The Gardener and I were both so proud of her. Go Mae!

Trick or Treat?

How About A Trick?

For the past week my husband and I have been planning for today to be a family fun day. We both have the day off from work and the kids didn't have school, so I thought we would use up some passes we had for the local indoor water park. But we weren't about to tell the children that. They knew that Daddy wasn't going to work but that usually means a noisy project with a possibility that the power may be turned off for a short time. So this morning when Mae showed up in our room she began asking "So what's the plan?" She was shocked and a little sorry she asked when I told her that she and Binny were both going to be getting flu shots today. I know, I'm a mean mom but I couldn't resist.

By the time we got in the car they were both pleading with us, saying they would promise to be better hand-washers and not get sick this winter. My response- "Fat chance, flu shots for everyone!" When we got to the water park we both shouted Happy Halloween and all had a good laugh. Did they really think that Daddy would take the day off to help Mommy hold down two screaming kids to get flu shots? The joke's on me next month when we go through this for real.

Happy Halloween!

All Things Halloween

We've had a week full of Halloween fun. Saturday we went to the pumpkin farm and bought 3 huge pumpkins. Binny picked the biggest weighing in at 28 pounds. I told her she had to carry it, and her response was "I can get a gourd instead." We didn't do that either, so I hauled all 3 monster Pumpkins to the car and made my husband unload them when we got home. He's got to be good for something after refusing to go Pumpkin shopping to stay home and put shelves in his new work van. Not that I'm complaining or anything. Oh Yeah, now that he has a new project, I haven't seen much of him. Could be worse I could still be listening to him complain about his old piece of shit work van. At least we've moved on a little.

So back to Halloween. Sunday we did Trick-or-Treat preview in Grandma's neighborhood. It was a little cold and damn windy and Binny fell once but thank goodness to her costume, she was not injured. It was probably her costume's fault to begin with, but what do you expect when you wear a lampshade around your waist. The girls got way too much candy. We only went to 3 houses and their little bags were full. Remember when getting the big candy bars was like hitting the Halloween jackpot? And the rest of the year when you drive past that person's house you comment on how rich they must be to afford to give everyone the big bars. Well, as a parent I hate the houses with the big bars. Yes I do. Or even the people who say take as many as you want, which is very dangerous with small children. "But mom he said I could have as many as I want" as my daughter digs through the bowl to get every last Kit Kat.

Friday is the big Trick-or-Treat here which should be a lot of fun. Hopefully no big bars, and I'm pretty sure of that, the people around here are pretty tight. I remember last year, the kids got a whole pile of those awful orange and black peanut butter taffy things. Talk about cheap candy. At least they won't eat those.
Today are the Halloween parties at school. More candy I'm sure. I am going this morning to help with Mae's class. How fun for me? I'm really looking forward to seeing all of the great costumes, and the not so great of course. When I was young I always thought those plasitic dress-cape costumes with the cheesy plastic mask were the ultimate Hallween sin. How hard is it to find a good costume? And really is Hannah Montana Halloween worthy, when you dress like her everyday? Come on.

Oh, and It snowed here on Monday.

Doin' the Nasty

A few days ago my husband and I asked the all important question to our children. What would you like to dress up as for Halloween? Last year was the first year that they were old enough to be involved in the costume making process, and it was a total success. We only have 2 rules- the costumes must be an original thought (no Disney characters) and we will make them as a family. So last year Mae was a vacuum cleaner and Binny was a purse, more specifically my purse. It was a great family project that lasted an entire weekend and we received great compliments while out trick or treating. Only a few people needed to ask "What are they supposed to be" which truly made my skin crawl because they are children, not a goofy miniature breed of dog.

So this year when we asked Binny, said she would love to be a cupcake- a cupcake (I feel like Joe Biden saying it twice but that's how I had to process it in my brain- over and over again.) How in the world can I turn a four-year old into a cupcake that can walk at least 2 blocks before falling over and skinning both knees? Well, Thank goodness for the Internet. So I went to 3 different craft stores to collect supplies and still didn't have the most important part of the outfit- the cheap, cheesy, never put on my end table pleated lampshade that I will spray paint silver. The only one I could find at any of the craft stores was $40- yikes! SO, yes I had to do the nasty as we call it in our family. I sucked it up and went to Wal-Mart. I have nothing against discount stores like Target and Kmart but Wal-Mart is just plain bad. Only on rare occasion will I shop at Wal-Mart and as soon as I return home I feel the need to take a shower and burn my clothes. I found what I needed, and for future reference Wal-Mart has an entire aisle devoted to tacky table lamps and crappy pleated shades. Go figure.
