Snow To Sunshine
I mentioned a few weeks back that we need a new bed. I also mentioned that buying a bed costs about as much as a beach vacation. Although a new bed would be nice, the Gardener and I are WAY overdue for a nice vacation alone.
About 6 months after we were married, we went to the Grand Canyon for a few days on a trip out to Arizona to see my family. I was already pregnant with Mae at the time and while it was nice, it did lack the honeymoon feel that we're going for this time around. 9 and a half years after getting married, we're finally going on a honeymoon!
After searching the Internet for a deal on a beach vacation for 2, we booked a 4 night all inclusive trip to Jamaica. A gorgeous resort on a beach with 5 pools, almost guaranteed SUNSHINE and highs in the 80s every day (according to Weather Underground), unlimited rum drinks and NO snow.
Unlike the 4-6 inches of snow we're getting here today along with 20mph winds. Sure makes me wish we were leaving right now. Mama needs some sunshine!
Funny thing though, this morning (after we booked and paid for everything last night) I started reading some reviews of the resort. The first page of reviews on Trip Advisor were so negative I felt a knot start growing in my stomach, but I then remembered that this is, after all, the Internet and I've read enough terrible comments on Youtube videos and blogs to know that some people just like to be negative. Not that I totally discounted the negative reviews, but after scouring many review sites and reading what I would consider a good sampling of reviews both positive and negative, I feel confident that we'll have a nice vacation. SO many of the negative commenters started out with "I'm not a picky person, and normally I don't complain, BUT.... " then left a long list of minor annoyances. Really? Not picky, but complaining about one staff member rolling their eyes at a guest when they asked to have their room changed for the third time because they weren't satisfied with the view? Sounds picky to me. I'd probably roll my eyes at them too and I hope that enough picky people read the reviews and choose not to go... at least the week we're there.

Wardrobe Wednesday
It snowed about 2 inches here yesterday. So the first thing the girls did when they hopped off the bus was ditch their backpacks and run to get the sleds and shovels out of the garage. They were soaked and cold by the time they finally came in after the sun went down. Until the snow had melted and dripped off enough to be dried in the dryer, their wet clothes sat draped all over the bathroom.

While I was in there, I snapped a picture of myself in the mirror just for fun. I bought this sweater a few weeks ago at the thrift store for $3 but after I took it home and washed it, one of the seams in the armpit came loose leaving a gaping hole. I finally got around to stitching it back together yesterday and wore it for the first time. It's incredibly soft and warm. A great find for $3 and 10 minutes of repair on a snowy afternoon.
Only after I took the picture did I realize that I hadn't brushed my hair at all yesterday. You're welcome, Internet.

More Ice Skating
We went ice skating again on Sunday. This time, instead of going into town, we loaded up the 4 wheeler and went out to my husband's parents house. They have a pond on their property that gets most of it's use during the summer months (with the exception of our once a year ice fishing expedition), but now that the girls and I have ice skates and the (4 wheel drive) Gardener has his toy, we can go out there for a little ice skating.
It was the most gorgeous winter day on Sunday. The sun was shining bright and there was NO WIND. A rarity around here! Even in the 20s, it was perfectly comfortable. The girls even took their jackets off toward the end because they were sweating so much under all the layers.
There was some snow on the frozen pond, but the Gardener didn't mind cleaning it up for us. It was just powdery snow, so it didn't hamper our skating one bit.
We brought along a chair for Binny to push around while she is still trying to get the hang of having 2 skinny blades strapped to her feet.
The girls also hitched a ride from Daddy...

It was a fun Sunday afternoon. Except for the part when Flash thought it was so much fun to run full speed into us and knock us over. Not funny, you little shit.

The Last Wardrobe Wednesday Of 2010
As much as I complain about our nearest town and their pushy religious views, they recently did something I love.* This fall they tore down some buildings on the main street and instead of leaving an unsightly pile of rubble and dirt, they flattened it all out and put in an outdoor ice skating rink.
*With the exception of the church music one of the local businesses is blasting from across the street.

We all had to buy new skates, but skating is free, so all this week we've been going at least once a day, sometimes twice.

Poor Mae and Binny's knees are black and blue from falling, but they are really starting to get the hang of it.

RTT- Short And Sweet
Again I'm cheating and writing this Monday night. 2nd shift still. Dinner was chicken noodle soup. The shitty kind from the can, which also happens to be Binny's favorite. I wasn't feeling the power to fight over yet another meal today so I caved and now she's full and happy and sleeping. I call it a win.
Mae came home from school early today. Not feeling well. She laid in the recliner most of the day. I gave her some Tylenol and put her to bed. Tonight would also be the first night in many that she hasn't come down with the complaint of not being tired. We'll see what tomorrow brings...
Speaking of tomorrow and bringing... we're expecting snow! Not Snowpocalypse snow, but maybe enough to close school and give us more time to make Valentine cards. The girls' class Valentine's Day parties are this Friday and we haven't even thought about making Valentine cards yet.
My Mother-in-law lost over 65 pounds and wrote her weight loss story to share with all of the Internet! Although being overweight has never been an issue for me (almost the opposite, in fact), I know many people do struggle with their weight and I'm so happy for them when they finally get a grasp on it. Bravo, Linda!
I finished our taxes and filed them. Our refund should be here in a week and then maybe, just maybe I'll convince my husband to go out and buy some new clothes. There are only so many times I can effectively spot treat the same greasy sweatshirt, and don't even get me started on those hole-y jeans. I'm thinking $200 cash at Fleet Farm should outfit him pretty well, as long as he doesn't wander into the tractor parts section...

Ice Fishing
Saturday after swimming lessons, the girls and I decided to bundle up in our most extreme winter gear and head out to the frozen lake to see what Uncle T was catching. Since he was fishing relatively close to where we live, we decided to pay him a visit. The girls knew to bundle up but I had to laugh when Mae told me all she was wearing. She had on a pair of long underwear (top and bottom) plus a t-shirt and jeans over that with a sweatshirt, snow pants, neck warmer, hat, winter coat, boots and mittens. Binny and I were also wearing some mighty winter wear but Mae was the most unrecognizable once she suited up.
We only stayed about 20 minutes. Just long enough to slide on the ice and snap a few photos.

Too cold for us to stay and do any actual fishing but hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will be able to do some late season (meaning warmer!) ice fishing like we did last year...

Random Tuesday Photos
Tuesday again.
It snowed today. About 3 inches of the fluffy stuff arrived last night and this morning. Couldn't have come on a better day either. Binny was given an activity calendar from school with a different activity to do each day. I think it's Healthy Choices Month or something like that. It just so happened that today's activity was to shovel the driveway. The Gardener and I waited until she got home from school to start cleaning up. After shoveling, Binny and went sledding down the mound (septic system) and I pulled her all around the yard. The snow was still gently falling yet it was warm enough that Binny's fingers didn't even get cold in her wet mittens.
I have also noticed that the days are getting considerably longer. Oh! and did anyone catch that beautiful full moon over the weekend? Friday night just as the sun went down it was glowing like a giant pumpkin in the eastern sky. I love stuff like that! Meteor showers too. Every August right around our wedding anniversary is the big summer meteor shower. I love to lay in the grass and watch the sky. Oh Summer, I can't wait!
I'm starting to think about garden plans for this Summer too. Before the ground froze, the Gardener plowed up the garden and pretty much the rest of our front yard. The garden will be twice as big this year. In addition to having more space for MORE vegetables, we want to make sure to leave enough space between rows (especially the tomatoes) to be able to get the rototiller through to clean out weeds and keep the ground worked. I also am thinking about starting many of my own veggie plants from seed in our basement. My mother-in-law does it every year with her annual flowers and gets great results, but it would be a first for me. We have the stuff for the lights and a table but I still need to buy all of the seed trays and seeds. If anyone has any tips for me or plant suggestions, I would appreciate it!
Uncle T came to dinner over the weekend. He was ice fishing not too far from our house so he stopped by afterward for enchiladas and UNO. I wouldn't let him leave without the three of them sitting still for a photo, although they really didn't sit still. It was also an opportunity to try out my new camera toy...
I wish I had the money for an external flash, but I don't and the built-in flash on my camera creates such terrible shadows, so lately my indoor photos haven't been so hot. Using just room light with my 50 mm/f1.8 lens, the photos come out grainy and even blurry if there is a lot of movement. I found a great compromise for only 25 dollars. I bought a Light Scoop from Amazon with a mirror inside that reflects the light of the built-in flash up to bounce off the ceiling for a more natural look. Amazing I tell you! It's not perfect for all indoor applications but it works great in our house. I have a whole Wardrobe Wednesday post of photos using the Light Scoop ready for tomorrow!
And with that, I need to run and figure out what to make for dinner! Be sure Click to over to Keely's blog for the whole Random Tuesday line-up.

Frosty Morning
*After totally grossing out my readers yesterday... sorry about that by the way, I can assure you that there is nothing gross in this post, just pretty winter photos.
As Mae bounded down the steps this morning she yelled, "Jack Frost was here! Come look!"
I quick made breakfast for the family then grabbed my camera, car keys, my sweatshirt and ran out the door to snap a few photos before the sun melted it all away. I should have taken a few minutes to clean off the filter from my seldom used wide angle lens but only noticed the issue after I was back in the warm house editing the photos. Oh well, it's clean now for next time.

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!
