Monday Garden Club

Get your gardening gloves and knee pads ready. It's time for another installment of Monday Garden Club.

The garden is growing like mad even though we haven't had any significant rain in several weeks. We have been watering in the mornings and evenings to keep things alive but the straw mulch we added into the front garden is doing a great job keeping the soil moist.

We didn't mulch the back garden so we have had to pay closer attention to it, but all of the plants back there seems to be tough enough to withstand days of no rain and pounding heat.

The pea plants are starting to flower
The lettuce is doing great. Anybody want some? I have no idea what I'm going to do with all of it.

Kohlrabies are almost ready to eatBroccoli too, all 6 heads! The summer squash and zucchinis are delicious. I used some fresh sage on a happy (organic, free range) chicken that I cooked on the grill the other night. So good!
Basil

Raspberries
sunflowers almost as tall as Mae

And now for the real garden treats. My boss has a very old Mulberry tree in the heifer pasture behind her house that is loaded with berries this year. The other morning after we finished chores I picked Mulberries until the heifers became too bothersome. I had never eaten or even seen a Mulberries before so what a treat for me. They look and taste similar to black raspberries but not as many seeds. We have eaten quite a few of them raw, but I still have enough left that I could make a tart or some jam.
Also, my neighbors (the people who own the strawberry and pea farm down the road) gave me a grocery bag full of sugar snap peas. I shelled and blanched enough to fill two quart freezer bags and I still have enough left in the fridge to probably make two more bags to freeze for later.
And last but not least, here are a few photos of my brother's garden. He sometimes feels left out on Garden Monday because he doesn't have his own blog, so last week I took some photos to post here. His flower gardens are quite impressive, especially the rose bushes covered in red and pink blooms. The bees love them too.
He bought this Astilbe plant just last year and look how great it's doing
Now for all you gardeners out there who wish to participate, either leave a comment on what's growing in your yard, or post a Monday Garden Club update on your blog. Don't forget to drop your link in the comments, I'll add you to this post.

Garden is looking great. I'd love some lettuce. I should try next year. Probably too late this year.

Great Gardens!

We've been busy in ours, much too busy but it's a third (or is it fourth) income for us and we seriously need it. I'm shooting for next Monday!

I'm impressed as always!

I've been working hard in the garden too, but more with hacking things down than growing anything.

The raspberries look great!

We got a bag of peas too! (Ate ours raw, though) Mmmm! Mine are coming in now though. I'm starting to get tomatoes. We have 3 mulberry trees too and my littlest one is FULL of berries. I froze mine. I battled the birds for half an hour....surprised you didn't hear me yelling at them.

I'm planning to head to the farmer's market this week and buy zucchini to make zucchini relish...one of my favorites. I miss having a garden of my own. I had one in Maine on my farm but here in WV I don't even have 1/2 acre. There's no place to plant...
