Random Tuesday Thoughts

Tuesday again, time to get all random with the Un-Mom...

randomtuesday

Holy Moly, I had 4 (count 'em!) participants in yesterday's Garden Monday! Thanks, Sheila for sending everyone with a garden over here. It will be fun to see what we can all grow by the end of the season! I may not be planting anything outdoors yet, but some of my warmer climate Bloggy friends have already planted and even harvested a few garden goodies. Go check them out by following the links at the bottom of yesterday's post.

It's rainy and cold here today so the greenhouse cart is once again in the shed under the faux sunshine. Some days I feel that summer is never going to get here. Remind me of this when I complain about the heat and eventual lack of rain in a few months.

Recently a letter was sent home from Mae's teacher requesting parent helpers to go along on the field trip to the zoo next month. Since I don't work, other than the dairy farm cow shit fest twice a week, I volunteered. A few days later a letter was sent home from Binny's teacher with all of the info for the parent-child kindergarten picnic, on the same day! Fuck! Luckily (or not, depending on how you look at it) the Gardener is still laid off from work so perhaps he can go to one or the other. Just stinks that they scheduled it all on the same day.

I never knew that there were so many people born in the month of May! Seriously, Binny has been invited to 3 birthday parties in the last month and we're having one here at the house for her in a few weeks. And what the hell is up with goodie bags? Seriously, after each party she comes home with a bag full of candy and cheap plastic, made in China throw away crap toys. I know it's all about the kids and kids love candy and brightly colored plastic toys but I can't bring myself to go to all that trouble just for high fructose corn syrup and the possibility of lead based paint. Without being one of those moms that only allows all natural ingredients and buys all of her kids toys from handcrafters on Etsy, what's a parent to do? Any suggestions?

Enough complaining for me today. See what this rain and cloudy weather does to me? Be sure to stop by Keely's blog for the whole Random Tuesday line up.

I never give goodie bags at Vi's birthday party. We have her party at a really nice park and the kids go nuts on the playground. No party favors necessary. Of course, we also ask that people don't bring Violet presents either.

Buck the system Aliceson! The kids will still have fun.

You go Ali!... You are so crafty, I'm sure you'll come up with something that will knock everyone else's socks off!

do a craft for the kids to take home instead of a goody bag. last year at oscar's party the kids made paper bag puppets and this year I'm going to have them decorating homemade dinosaur sugar cookies. would mae's friends like something like that? maybe some butterfly/flower/sun/spring-like cookie decorating, then they can take some cookies home? A little more prep work for you, but you can do the sugar cookies the night before and whip up icing in a jiff. It's on the cheap side, too.

oh, and I agree with kelly, none of it is really necessary so do what you want!

My SIL didn't do goody bags this year. Instead, she bought a white t-shirt for all the kids and they tie dyed them as their craft and "take home". She kept them until they dried, laundered all of them and tied them up with pretty ribbons to be delivered the next week. The kids were extra excited to get them. And I think the Moms were happier about it, too.

Right now I'd happily take the heat and dry because our temps are just way too cold for May. It will come eventually, right?!

It is cold here. It is wet here.

*sob*

I don't get "goody bags" - we never gave them out when the kids were little. The kids came to the party, they played games, we ate cake and ice cream, the birthday boy/girl opened presents, everyone went home.

I think a craft is a good idea - one they can make and take home.

Yeah, what about those May birthdays? Daughter, sister and niece, plus a second cousin once removed and my parents had the gall to be married at the end of May. Add in recitals, special events, field trips, soccer and an assortment of other things, and yeah, freakin' busy month!

Hi. Stopping by from Keely's place. Best idea I've seen for a b-day party was a pillowcase that the kids decorated with fabric paint and markers. It was a mock slumber party theme. My son is now 14 and we still use that pillowcase. (tho it's usually on one of his little brothers' beds) Happy Tuesday

Hope it warms up for you today. It sure has been cold and dreary.
